The Wolrd's Largest Tanzanite
The Largest Tanzanite was found recently in Mererani, Tanzania. This Tanzanite was discovered in the C block of the mine, and is reputed to be over 2.5 Kg in weight. This is a very rare find and is similar in status to the find of the Cullinan diamond in South Africa in 1905 which weighed about 3106 carats in rough form .
Tanzanites are much rarer then Diamonds because of their very limited supply within an area of only few square kilometers at the foot of mount Kilimanjaro. This Tanzanite find is a marker in time for the true value of Tanzanites and their tremendous investment potential. It is estimated that the supply of Tanzanite , which is very limited , will diminish in 15 years.
Tanzanite is Trichonic
Tanzanite has three basic colors, Blue, Violet and Burgundy. These three colors make up the final Tanzanite Gemstone color and Brilliance. In general a Tanzanite Gemstone when it is cut and polished , either has a deep Blue Violet Color (known as BV in Certification) or a Violet Blue Color (VB), If you look at the Tanzanite grading system which we show on our website, Tanzanite Grading, you see the two color ranges, VB range for Violet Blue and the BV range for Blue Violet. Both these ranges are desirable and hold the same value, however within each range, the deeper the color the more valuable the Tanzanite.
Tanzanite Grading
The depth of color ranges from Exceptional (E) to Vivid(V), Intense (I) , Moderate(M),Light(L) and finally Pale (P). The top three colors are E,V,I. This Grading system was introduced by the Tanzanite Foundation, an international body which focuses on setting up international standards for the Grading of Tanzanites and also good industry practices from production to retail. There are other grading systems for Tanzanites which you may well encounter, but it seems at the moment that the Proposal by the Tanzanite Foundation will be accepted by the major Gemological Institutions worldwide which deal with Tanzanite Grading.
